Any company who deploys dedicated Android devices needs to initialise new, replacement devices or those returned after the repair, with a rapid, secure and functional Staging process that meets the demands of your specific business.

Rapid staging: in contexts with critical business processes (for instance an E-commerce warehouse or a production plant in which there must be no interruptions of activities of more than 2-3 minutes) or those which manage a significant number of devices (for example a Retail Store, which can contain up to 500 devices deployed for Self Scanning and back-office activities), it is necessary to activate devices rapidly.

Secure Staging: protection of the device must be guaranteed depending on the context, in such a way that users:

  • can not browse the settings
  • are only enabled to use of certain Apps
  • can not access via USB

Staging is often performed directly by staff that have no IT skills and must apply these settings without knowledge of the underlying complexity.

Staging according to specific business demands: devices are almost always used in the same place (a store, a warehouse or a plant system) with different purposes depending on the type (kiosk, tablet, PDA) model, positioning, department, area of use or according to various other criteria. Those involved in the staging must have one single activation process, easily configurable depending on the specific use.

The technological solution to avoid manual configuration of individual devices (by automating the process, avoiding initialisation errors and drastically reducing the staging times) consists in the possibility to define the rules and set any of the following device activation modes:

  • reading of a QR code
  • reading of an NFC tag

The complexity of activating these processes often consists in the lack of valid support and assistance to those who are responsible for the management of the devices, which forces the company to adopt manual methodologies that are extremely time-consuming (exceeding 20 minutes for the setup of a single device!) and the risk of making mistakes during the initialization or not applying all of the envisaged security rules.

Smartilio supports companies during this process to render it rapid, secure and fully automated.  During the “Smart-Staging” phase, the strategy and rules are defined with the customer, including an analysis of the context and the purpose of use of the device:

  • business processes involved
  • frequency and type of use
  • users who will use it
  • business applications
  • staff assigned to the initialization of the devices and with what constraints (connectivity, activation times, expertise)
  • and the definition with the customer of all such specifications
  • configuration of the standard features of the device (including date and time, language, lock screen)
  • configuration of the device network
  • lockdown of the device (including kiosk mode, allowed applications, visible and browsable settings)
  • device operating system version

Once the process has been assessed with the customer, Smartilio deals with the tools, configurations and the optimal process, defining the QR code or staging tag. The customer receives a POC to evaluate the soundness of the solution and guarantees effective, autonomous and rapid work to operators.
